Abstract: [Purpose/significance] With the development of the Internet and extensive use of digital educational resources, academic misconduct is characterized with new features and significant increase. To deepen our understanding of the working mechanism of online academic misconduct, this paper explores how social norm exerts influence on online academic misconduct, and examines the mediating variables in between. [Method/process] Given the increasing social nature of academic misconduct in the Internet environment, we adopt a micro perspective to examine the specific influence mechanism of social norm on online academic misconduct. Drawing upon Bandura’s social cognitive theory of morality and the four-component model by Rest, a sequential mediation model of perceived importance and moral judgement is built and tested with survey data collected in three universities in Shanghai. [Result/conclusion] Results show that social norm exerts significant direct and indirect effects on online academic misconduct. The indirect effect is generated through two mediating paths: the independent mediating effect of moral judgment; the sequential mediating effect of perceived importance and moral judgment. While adding to the literature of academic misconduct by offering new perspective on this issue, the findings can facilitate more accurate and targeted measures to curb and regulate online academic misconduct.

Key words: social norm, perceived importance, moral judgment, online academic misconduct, college students
