Data Curation Education in Library and Information Science Schools in North America

Data curation is a hot topic in the field of library and information science. This study studied LIS schools' curricula in North America and revealed current practice & issues of data curation education. Through in-depth analyses of course syllabi and comparison of course objectives, prerequisites, readings, assignments and topics, the results showed about 32 percent of the institutions offering the data curation courses. While some schools offered the course as one of special topics instead of regular course, all courses focused on data curation. Some course titles were slightly varied, and class topics showed diversification. All courses included strong practical elements, in which a hands-on learning project as final course project was the major component of the grading. Finally, the authors made recommendations on the data curation education.
