A Comparative Analysis of Seven Professional Competency Standards of American Librarians

[Purpose/significance] Seven special professional competency standards of American librarians are comparatively analyzed to find their core elements and main items. [Method/process] The differences in the applicable audience, elements and items of the competency standards were comparatively analyzed based on the analysis of the contents of seven special professional competency standards of American libraries.[Result/conclusion] It is found that seven competency standards have defined their different users; those competency standards are composed of eighteen elements of competencies named as organization management, collection resource management, marketing and promotion, communication skills, leadership and planning, customer service, professional quality, assessment skills, information technologies, cooperative skills, teaching skills, research skills, customer knowledge, knowledge base, profession development, subject expertise, curriculum knowledge and presentation skills; the competences defined by those elements that appear in more than four competency standards at the same time are clearly different in terms of different competency standards.
