Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] Background music has certain influence on college students' reading effect. Facing the normal reading scene of college students, it reveals the mechanism between music type, mood induced by background music and reading effect from the user's micro perspective, further expands the theoretical cognition of the influence of background music on reading effect, and supplement the research on the adaptability of S-O-R model in the context of background music reading. It will help to improve the reading effect of college students pertinently and continuously, and provide theoretical basis and empirical evidence for improving the efficiency of reading promotion and accurate supply of reading services in university libraries.[Method/Process] In this study, eye tracking technology was used to collect the experimental data of 64 university students' eye movements with an eye tracker. Based on the "stimulus organism response" (S-O-R) model, the emotional status, cognitive load and reading effect of the subjects were measured with the emotion measurement scale, and the mechanism of different music types affecting reading effect was explored and management suggestions were put forward.[Result/Conclusion] Different background music types have different effects on reading emotion and reading effect:whether it is instrumental or human voice, fast rhythm awakens positive emotions, slow rhythm awakens negative emotions. The background music rhythm has influence on cognitive load, reading processing difficulty and speed. The vocal music of the timbre significantly affects reading speed. Fast tempo background music awakens positive emotions, induces high arousal, and has a negative impact on reading. Slow tempo background music awakens negative emotions, induces low arousal, and has a positive impact on reading. In addition, music emotion has a mesomeric effect in the influence of background music on reading effect. The academic libraries should optimize the supply of reading services by designing targeted reading service strategies for background music, providing reading service spaces that integrate personalized background music, and improving the background music functions of digital reading products.
