Abstract

This paper designs an eye tracking experiment to study the characteristics of web users' search behaviors in the exploratory search process. Using methods of eye-tracking, questionnaires and interviews, the experiment designs one question-answer search task and two different complex exploratory search tasks, and divides participants into two groups according to their retrieval abilities. It analyzes the difference of search behaviors of search, link, close and eye data for the task and Area of Interest between different tasks and groups. The results indicate that search tasks and retrieval abilities can affect users' search behaviors in the exploratory search process.
