[Purpose/significance] Analyze the role of citation in academic writing with the related concepts of Relevance Theory. [Method/process] "Relevance" is a precondition for the cause of citation. Relevance Theory can also serves as the cognitive theoretical framework to interpret "knowledge transmission". [Result/conclusion] The communicators (authors and readers) construct a common cognitive context through citation for themselves. The convergence process of cognitive context information or assumptions for authors and readers is the process for communicators seek the maximal and optimal relevance through citation.
