[Purpose/significance] This paper reviews the existing research of environmental scanning(ES), points out the future research contents and riches the research achievements in the field of ES in order to provide theoretical basis for the study of the relevant scholars to better grasp the ES problems.[Method/process] Aiming at the domestic and foreign research status of ES, the authors systematically comb and analyze a large number of classic literatures at home and abroad about ES, and mainly review from the research status and the concept of ES, the classification and dimension of environment.[Result/conclusion] Foreign studies about ES is more and the research area is comprehensive, relevant research about ES starts late in our country and mainly concentrates in the field of library information science; three kinds of environmental classification methods and three dimensions of ES are widely used in studies of ES; related researches about ES also need to be paid further attention.
