Abstract

[Purpose/significance] The academic organization is an important channel for researchers to obtain information resources. To examine its characteristic of online information communication will benefit the community members in information sharing and knowledge creation. [Method/process] The Association of Internet Researchers was chosen as the data source, whose email list archive from 2001 to 2016 was collected. Using social network analysis methods, main indicators of the communication network were analyzed and the whole network was visualized. [Result/conclusion] Information activities of the academic organization community obey long-tail distribution, composing a multi-level core-periphery hierarchical network. The cliques in the social network evolved from an intensive structure to a loose one as time passed, which reflects the experience of fast developing, stable and declining period. The academic organization should reinforce the responsibility of information construction, and ensure core members pay continuous attention to and harness the virtual community to form optimal information ecology.
