[Purpose/Significance] This paper aims to explore the selection and influence of privacy strategies for social media users, and clarify the differences in user privacy management strategy choices at different periods, to provide reference for strengthening user personal privacy protection and improving privacy settings on social media platforms. [Method/Process] Based on the communication privacy management theory (CPM), the paper divided privacy management strategies on social media platform into prevention strategies before disclosure, review strategies during disclosure, and correction strategies after disclosure. Through quasi-experimental method, it explored the influence of different perceived privacy risk levels and perceived privacy control degrees on users’ privacy management policy selection. With path analysis, it empirically tested the relations between social awareness, privacy concerns, self-disclosure, and privacy management strategies. [Result/Conclusion] The results show that perceived privacy risk and perceived privacy control have a significant effect and interaction effect on the selection of privacy management strategies. Users with a high level of privacy concern tend to disclose less personal information, while users with more self-disclosure experience adopt more lenient privacy management strategies. It provides theoretical references and practical implications for how social media platforms can provide flexible and rich privacy management strategies based on users’ psychological and cognitive characteristics, thereby strengthening privacy protection.
