Knowledge Organization Thought of Zheng Qiao and S. R. Ranganathan

Taking the contributions of oriental school in KO system thought as center, this paper studies the scientific factors and theoretical values of Jiaochoulue of Zheng Qiao in southern Song dynasty and facet thought of Ranganathan in modern India. Zheng Qiao’s KO thought not only emphasizes to find the origins of ancient knowledge and classify them into the ethnical knowledge system, but to leave space in the existing knowledge organization to locate lost knowledge in history. Zheng Qiao also stresses to collect and organize ancient knowledge to guarantee the completeness and inheritance. While as for Ranganathan, his library theory emphasizes the Indic tradition of knowledge, his classification with elastic marking system leaves adequate space for new knowledge to be organized, and advances the new development of modern KO theories. It is concluded that ethnical KO thought must be thoroughly studied.
