Analysis of Regional Technical Distribution Based on Patent Data

Based on China patents during the period of 1985-2008, this paper develops technical concentration and technical opportunity indicators, and classifies the patents from 2001 to 2008 into four categories, namely leading technology, pervasive technology, mature technology and lock-in technology. On the basis of the distribution features of technology capacity in the four categories, 29 provinces except Tibet are analyzed from multi-dimensional scaling factors and classified into four groups. Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong province have obvious technical advantages in leading and pervasive technology. Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces concentrate their capacity in mature technology. Eleven other provinces have technological advantage only in lock-in sector, and another thirteen in mature and lock-in ones.
