The Library Mobile Services in USA:A Case Study of New York State Libraries

Abstract

Whether libraries have adopted mobile devices to provide mobile service, this research attempts to reveal the facts and issues relating to the change by surveying public and academic libraries in New York State, USA. The investigation resulted:①More than 90% libraries provide services for mobile users;②Over half libraries provide six or more service categories to various mobile devices;③While remotely access to library catalog and digital content is the most frequently activity supported by the mobile-optimized library websites, multiple social networking activities through third-party platforms are undertaken in many public and university/college libraries;④Almost half of the libraries have strategic plans to help guide mobile services in their libraries. The data hopefully provide librarians, technologists, and information professionals with an increased awareness of the current mobile services in the US to endorse libraries' mobile services.
