Development Analysis of Next Generation Catalog in China

Based on 10 characteristics of next generation catalog, this paper analyzes the state of OPACs and discovery tools toward next generation catalog in National Library of China, National Science Library of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 985 project university libraries, then evaluates and ranks them according to the levels of their developments. It proposes that discovery tools have more next generation catalog's characteristics than OPACs, and they are both still not the real next generation catalogs. The relative lack of one-stop retrieval, spelling check, relevancy, recommendations, user contribution and RSS are the features.
