Abstract

[Purpose/significance]The study aims to investigate the research progress and findings of image features abroad, to provide references for promoting the image indexing and extracting technology.[Method/process]This paper provides an overview on image feature research abroad, including the study of classification and stratification of image metadata standards and related image features, the users behaviors when describing and searching images, and influence factors.[Result/conclusion]Research on image feature abroad are comprehensive and systematic.It covers both perspectives of image-centered and user-centered.The research methods consist of query log analysis and investigation research.Moreover, the population of the previous research involves ordinary and professional people.Meanwhile, image type, users' visual experience, professional knowledge, task type and searching stage, may influence the use of image features.Chinese research on image features should conduct more work on building image features system for non-professional users and investigating how users use the image features.
