Abstract

[Purpose/significance] Mapping knowledge domain aims to reveal the development process and the structure of a scientific domain, by visually analyzing the relevant journal articles and patent reports etc. The research and application of it is in the ascendant since 2005. But the problems of unclear conception and fuzzy subject orientation still exist in the current related research, which makes the combing and clarification of this domain badly in need. [Method/process] By using the methods of literature research and conceptual contrast, the definition scope of mapping knowledge domain, the relations of it with knowledge map and science mapping, and the subject orientation of it are clarified. [Result/conclusion] Mapping knowledge domain overlaps with knowledge map and scientific mapping, but stills has some unique features. It is one branch of information visualization and belongs to the discipline of scientometrics, mainly being used to reveal the structure characteristics of scientific knowledge. This could provide reference for further understanding of mapping knowledge domain.
