Research on Impact of Search Task and Search Ability on Users' Exploratory Search Behaviors

[Purpose/significance] This paper explores the impact of users' search capabilityand task type on exploratory search behavior and further understandexploratory search, to provide reference for establishing and improving the exploratory search systems, and constructing the model of exploratory search behavior.[Method/process] Onequestion-answering search task and twoexploratory search ones with different complexityaredesigned. Experiment participants areclassified into two groups according to theirsearch capabilities, and then the search experiments are carried out. The methods of questionnaire survey, browser log analysis and search process video analysis areused from two perspectives of search task and users' search capability. The depth analysis aredeveloped in four aspects, including search tools, search terms, search actions and webpage indexes. [Result/conclusion] Search capability and task type have positive effects on the depth and vitalityof exploratory search. Additionally, the characteristics of exploratory search such as the dynamics of information needs evolution and advancement of search path fluctuation arealso revealed.
