Mental Models Research of Undergraduate Text and Image Reading

[Purpose/significance]The purpose of the paper is to understand the role of text and image in the construction of a reading mental model, to understand how undergraduates handle text and image information in the reading process, and their mental models construction. It can help undergraduates revise and improve their mental models of text and image reading, preferably understand reading content, improve their reading ability, and enhance the practicability of the library.[Method/process]The paper puts forward hypothesis according to reading information processing strategies, determine text image reading unit and integration projects, using eye-tracking methods, investigate the text and image read circumstance in different grades and different education of Zhaoqing University students, as well as their integration capability of text-image and strategies used.[Result/conclusion]Text and image in reading plays a different role in the construction of mental models. Undergraduates have a more perfect text reading mental models,able to inform simple mental model in the process of image reading, and finish part of a specific task, but it can't solve complex problems. When undergraduates use the strategies to answer more complex questions, the text image integration ability is lower, spending on the image read is longer. University is more emphasis on text reading ability cultivation, cultivation of an image reading ability is not enough attented. The paper gives training plans and measures that we draw up to strengthen the image information building (reading environment),enhance undergraduates' image-related knowledge(Prophet experience), and improve their image reading and text image integration ability(cognitive ability).
