The Development of Data Services in University Libraries for RIM and Its Enlightenment

[Purpose/significance]Nowadays data of managing scientific research are spread across different systems and lack of being organized.Research information management (RIM) now is drawing attentions for research funding agencies, universities and libraries. This paper studies this new data services and expects to provide some references for domestic universities. [Method/process] Firstly, this paper listed the definition, object clients, contents for RIM and its difference comparedwith RDM. Secondly, it analyzed the advantages for libraries to carry out this service. The existing international programs were also summarized by the project investigation and literature reviews. Lastly, the author put forward some thoughts and enlightenment based on practices of his own library. [Result/conclusion] This paper proposes that data for RIM include output metadata, contextual metadata, statistical data and unstructured data. RIM could not only promote the accuracy and reliability of research planning and management in universities, but also strengthen the importance of libraries in researches, develop a new data service area and promote the reform of institutional repositories.
