[Purpose/significance] By analyzing group users' characteristics and behavior data, we can understand their motivation and the factors accelerating a group, so as to provide assistance for the group development, academic exchange and research management.[Method/process] In this paper, we analyzed users' motivation joining a group comprehensively from users' role, behavior, relationship, career, discipline, interest and so on. We also analyzed the dynamic evolution of groups by users' joining time point.[Result/conclusion] The findings show that users' discipline and interest are essential factors influencing the forming and development of groups. Groups can promote the building of academic network, and the diversity in discipline can improve the academic exchange. It also finds out that the advantages of the virtual academic community are not fully exercised. And the development of groups shows certain regularity.
