[Purpose/significance] This paper presents the findings from a qualitative preliminary case study on information behavior of college student teams for Mathematical Contest in Modeling(MCM), which includes the information behavior characteristics, the model of information behavior of college student teams for MCM and the factors that influence the information behavior, in order to provide a scientific reference for improving the college students' information literacy and innovation ability. [Method/process] When the college student teams for MCM regarded as the research unit, discourse analysis and inductive content analysis are carried out based on five cases data collecting by depth interview and participatory observation. [Result/conclusion] The results show that: (1) The information teams mainly sought and used is electronic data.(2)When refer to how to obtain the information, more priority is given to professional database and search engine is complementary. (3) The teams retrieve the literatures mainly through the full text or keywords. (4) Results sharing pattern(RSP) is used among team members for team information search. (5) The encounter information using plays an important role in improving the quality of mathematical model.(6)College mathematical modeling team information behavior has its general behavior model.
