Abstract

[Purpose/significance] The study of the historical root of a research area, and finding out the important origin papers is of great significance for the construction and research in this area. [Method/process] For this purpose, we introduced the connotation and philosophy of reference publication years spectroscopy (RPYS), and inducted RPYS analysis to four steps. On that basis, we take health literacy research as an example and use RPYS to explore the historical root of health literacy. [Result/conclusion] The result shows that RPYS can identify the historical root accurately in health literacy. At the meantime, we find that RPYS can be used to explore the hot research topic and research trend of a research area.
