[Purpose/significance] Reveal the establishing process of Harvard-Yenching Institute Sinological Index Office,summarie its impact on the indexing field, to provide the experience for developing the autient book repository. [Method/process] Through literature analysis method and deductive method, the article summarizes the social background of East West cultural exchanges and Chinese traditional intellectuals transformation before the establishment of Sinological Index Office, analyses index achievement of Sinological Index Office under the influence of rearranging the national heritage movement and the index movement. [Result/conclusion] Harvard-Yenching Institute Sinological Index Office is the product under the influence of many factors,western learning spreading to the East, rearranging the national heritage,indexing movement,during the period of the Republic of China. Harvard-Yenching Institute Sinological Index promotes the development of China's index. The successful experience of Harvard-Yenching Institute Sinological Index has important implication for the knowledge mining and humanity calculating of ancient books.
