[Purpose/significance] "Double first-class" construction makes the university ranking become the social focus, but whether it can reflect the true level of colleges and universities has been questioned. So to verify the fairness and rationality of university ranking system is significant.[Method/process] The study takes Academic Ranking of World Universities(ARWU) as the research object. On the basis of exploring the ARWU index system and its structure, the study compares ARWU with the famous university ranking system, such as QS, THES, and USNWR. The study has made an empirical analysis on the well-known universities in Southeast Asia.[Result/conclusion] And results show that ARWU's ranking is different from that of QS, THES and USNWR, and there is a possibility of systematic error. Therefore, it is necessary to dialectically treat all kinds of university ranking system, and on the basis to improve and correct these systems from the aspects of index adjustment.
