Abstract

[Purpose/significance] Users' querying behavior is an important part of the information search. This paper intended to sort out these studies to form a more complete review.[Method/process] This paper reviewed the literature, and classified researches into three levels:query term level, query level and session level, and three dimensions:vocabulary, syntax and semantics. Then, it summarized the research findings from each level and each dimension, and discussed the differences and relations among them. The related researches about query reformulation behavior, the quality and the evaluation of queries, and factors that influence users' querying behavior were synthesized.[Result/conclusion] The results show that there are more related researches focusing on the vocabulary dimension of the query term and the query level among previous researches. In the future, it is necessary to pay more attention to studying syntax and semanticsdimensions in order to understand the characteristics of users' querying behavior better. In addition, the exploration of the automatic identification of categories and patterns of the query reformulation is inadequate. In terms of the quality and the evaluation of queries, it is necessary to study further the query recommended model which can be easy to understand and benefit for users' searching by combining a variety of context factors.
