The Knowledge Structure and Evolution of Interdisciplinary Subjects from the Citation Perspective of Discipline and Journals: A Case Study of Library and Information Science

Abstract

[Purpose/significance] With the rapid development of information technology, the trend of cross-integration between disciplines isbecoming more and more obvious. It is of great significance to explore the interdisciplinary knowledge exchange activities and clear the structure of disciplines. This paper takes the library and information science(LIS) as an example to observe the inflow and outflow of knowledge, including the disciplines and directions of knowledge inflow and outflow.[Method/process] We selected twelve core journals in the field of LIS as the data sources, anddivided the disciplines according to CNKI's discipline classification. Finally, we used Gephi(a visualization software tool),to explore the intercross between LIS and other disciplines from the perspective of reference and citation. [Result/conclusion] This paper reveals that:LIS is closely related to the disciplines of computer science, basic science synthesis,economic managementand so on, and the disciplinary structure tends to be stable; the total reference volume of LIS is far less than that of citation; the self-citing rate of LIS has been declining year by year, and the exchangeof LIS with external disciplines is frequent.
