[Purpose/significance] In the era of e-Research and big data, research support service has become one of the significant strategic directions of deepening service in academic libraries. By investigating and analyzing the current situation of research support services offered by the world famous academic libraries, this paper aims at providing reference for Chinese university libraries, and advancing the "Double Tops" process by improving research support services.[Method/process] The paper selected 76 libraries of the top 100 universities listed in the QS World University Rankings in 2017 as samples and conducted a website investigation for these libraries' research support services. Then, based on the investigation result, it analyzed the main service types and the corresponding service content and forms of research support services in academic libraries.[Result/conclusion] The research support services can be divided into 7 aspects:research data management, open access, scholarly publishing, research impact measurement, research guides, research consultation, and research tools recommendation. In order to accelerate the construction of "Double Tops" universities in China, academic libraries should formulate a strategic plan for research support services, provide support service aimed at different stages of the research lifecycle, build a dedicated research support team, understand researchers' requirements and offer targeted training, and create research support web pages to integrate and navigate service programs.
