[Purpose/significance] Social media archiving has become an important content in web archive field. By combing and summarizing the related literature, this paper aims to provide reference for future related research in this field. [Method/process] Based on the multi-disciplinary perspective, we obtain the literature distribution features and summarized the theoretical basis of social media archive, by the means of bibliometrics analysis and content analysis. Then, we summarized the theory and practice of social media archiving as three research topics at the macro level, including "purpose and subject", "policy and guide" and "problems and obstacles". [Result/conclusion] This paper puts forward some characteristics for the research of social media archiving, including rapid development, closely related to practice and unbalanced regional development. Ultimately, this paper points out that scholars and practitioners should pay attention to the change of research object, construction of archiving standards and the cooperation among multiple subjects. We also give some brief suggestions to the practice and research of social media archiving in China.
