[Purpose/significance] Citizen science refers to non-traditional sense of scientific researchers participate in the scientific research process as new scientific research paradigm and new open innovation model. The analysis of the development trend and challenges of citizen science has certain reference significance for the development of citizen science in China.[Method/process] Based on the literature research, typical case analysis, comparative analysis methods, this study analyzed the development of citizen science, the typical citizen science projects and the problems faced. Then this paper put forward some policy suggestions for the development of citizen science.[Result/conclusion] Citizen science is a new type of open innovation, which is conducive to promoting the development of open science, improving citizens' scientific literacy and public participation in government decision-making. It should be aware of the enormous potential of public science and promoting the progress of citizen science from policy level.
