[Purpose/significance] In view of the poor social service of academic libraries in China, this paper tries to find an effective and long-term model to promote the extensive participation of academic libraries and better meet the cultural needs of the people.[Method/process] Taking the library of China West Normal University as an example, this paper outlines the model of popular science base from the aspects of organization construction, operation model and social benefits. This paper analyses the advantages of this model in constructing restraint mechanism, resource guarantee mechanism, incentive mechanism and smooth service channel mechanism.[Result/conclusion] Under the principle of voluntariness, academic libraries, the Provincial Party Committees Propaganda Department and the Provincial Social Science Federation jointly build the popular science base to carry out the socialized service. Through funds from many organizations, coordinating the platform, and borrowing the perfect management system and operation mechanism of the popular science base, the long-term mechanism of the socialized service of academic libraries is constructed. Moreover, the work of popular science base has been carried out extensively throughout the country. As an important cultural service unit, academic libraries are among the objects of declaration and are easy to meet the conditions of declaration. Therefore, the socialized service model based on popular science base is a flexible, effective and operable model which has a broad participation mechanism and is sustainable, which is worth promoting.
