Abstract

[Purpose/significance] Based on the protection motivation theory, this paper examines the impact of epidemic information on public's risk awareness, reveals how people perceive the epidemic risks, and explores the communication measures that can improve the public's intention to protect health.[Method/process] Through an online survey, this paper obtains 450 questionnaire data from 28 provinces in China, PLS is used for structural equation model analysis, and the hypothesis is finally verified through the measurement model and structural model detection.[Result/conclusion] This paper finds that threat awareness and countermeasure awareness can significantly improve the public's threat appraisal and coping appraisal, and form the unique risk perception characteristics. If we can follow these characteristics when communicating with the public, we will be able to maximize their intention to protect health. This paper also finds that the public's perception vulnerability is low, which may lead to a series of problems such as optimism bias, which deserve more attention.
