[Purpose/significance] Summarizing the current situation and characteristics of accessibility of research libraries in North America in order to provide reference for Chinese university libraries to create accessible environment for disabled readers. [Method/process] Using the method of literature investigation and network investigation, we have conducted extensive research on the North American research libraries from the aspects of the assistance services, accessible facilities, hardware and software auxiliary facilities, accessibility of Web pages, and summarized its characteristics. [Result/conclusion] The university libraries of our country can strengthen the construction of accessibility by making complete library service policy and enhancing the service consciousness of the disabled readers, strengthening the design of accessible Web pages and the construction of the columns of the Website for the disabled readers, improving the hardware, software auxiliary equipment and accessible format resources for the disabled readers, actively collecting the information of the disabled readers and practically carrying out the humanized service for the disabled readers.
