Abstract

[Purpose/significance] Cultural heritage images are important resource carriers and manifestation of human cultural memory, and the critical research materials and primary research objects for humanities research. From the perspective of digital humanities, systematic investigation and research on distant reading visualization of cultural heritage images will help to further understand the concept of distant reading, promote the digital humanities practice and value mining of massive cultural heritage images. [Method/process] Firstly, this paper analyzed the fundamental theories of distant reading visualization of cultural heritage images based on the concept of digital humanities distant reading. Secondly, this study proposed a distant reading visualization framework of cultural heritage images and comprehensively analyzed the distant reading visualization of cultural heritage images from tasks, visualization interaction, image visual features, users and visual presentation by using the methods of literature research, case analysis and open coding. Then, the reading path and reading structure of distant reading of cultural heritage images were discussed. Finally, the paper summarized the problems and challenges faced by the distant reading visualization of cultural heritage images. [Result/conclusion] Distant reading has been used in the analysis and visual display of cultural heritage image resources, while focusing on the combination of distant reading and close reading. The reading structures of distant reading visualization of cultural heritage images can be divided into flat and progressive structures. The distant reading visualization of cultural heritage images still has strong experimental characteristics. There are still many problems and challenges in theoretical guidance, application of the intelligent technology and methods, visual interaction and support of humanistic research.
