Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] Users' information avoidance behavior not only reduces the business value of social media platforms, but also may predict that they drop using the platform. Therefore, identifying the determinants of users' information avoidance intention is crucial to social media platforms.[Method/Process] From a C-A-C perspective, this research examined the information avoidance intention of social media users. The paper obtained 462 valid responses and conducted data analysis using a mixed method including structural equation model and fsQCA.[Result/Conclusion] The results indicate that information overload, functional overload and social overload affect fatigue and dissatisfaction, both of which further influence users' information avoidance intention. By the analysis of fsQCA, the research also identifies two paths that trigger users' information avoidance intention. The findings reveal that social media platforms should adopt information screening and functional customization to mitigate users' overload perceptions and negative emotions such as fatigue and dissatisfaction in order to prevent users' information avoidance intention and promote the continuous development of platforms.
