On the Influence Mechanism of Library Users' Information Literacy on Borrowing Behaviors

Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] This paper aims to investigate the relationship between library users' information literacy and their library visits and borrowing behaviors, in order to rich our understanding of how users' information literacy affects their information behaviors.[Method/Process] A new scale of information literacy had been developed by incorporating recent studies on the topic. Data were collected by a survey of 258 library users, with a questionnaire covering the new scale of information literacy and user data including user reading and borrowing behaviors. PLS-SEM was used to examine the structure of the newly developed scale and the relationships between users' information literacy, library visits, and library reading and borrowing behaviors.[Result/Conclusion] An 8-dimension and 26-item scale of information literacy is developed by confirmatory factor analysis. The measurement model of and all paths connecting information literacy have been significantly affected by social desirability, a common source of common methods bias. Meanwhile, after controlling user characteristics and social desirability, users' total number of borrows from library is positively related to their information literacy, with a standardized path coefficient β=0.211, p=0.006, whereas user's library visits mediate this relationship, with an indirect effect of 0.05, accounting for 19.16% of the total effect, and the bias corrects bootstrapping confidence interval of[0.019, 0.093]. Therefore, our research provides empirical evidence on understanding how user's information literacy affects their information behaviors as well as the necessity of libraries to provide social education on information literacy. Methodologically, our study validates a new and reliable instrument to measure information literacy. Meanwhile, our study also provides empirical evidence on understanding and controlling the impacts of common methods bias in empirical studies in the field of library, information and archives.
