Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] In order to discover whether there are differences in learning outcomes in different seeking methods by exploring the learning outcomes of users under different health information seeking channels. [Method/Process] Three research methods, including simulated retrieval experiment, questionnaire and in-depth interview, were used to design health information users’ learning outcome assessment indexes in two dimensions, cognitive learning and attitudinal learning, and to compare the differences in learning outcomes among users of the three information seeking methods. [Result/Conclusion] The study finds that there are differences in the cognitive learning outcomes obtained by users of the three information seeking methods after searching. The information content learned by users during the search process is influenced by the information seeking method and the information source. There are also differences in the types of emotions and emotional change paths of users before and after seeking information. The results of the study theoretically extend the existing cognitive learning outcome classification studies that have been commonly focused on in the search-as-learning field, corroborate the intrinsic relationship between users’ cognitive learning and attitudinal learning, and provide a useful reference for laying out the analysis of the search-as-learning process.
