Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] Through the analysis of the reading appeal elements of co-read books in virtual reading community, the article aims to deeply understand the focus, changes and mechanism of the interaction between readers and reading materials, and provides suggestions for reader-centered book matchmaking and reading service. [Method/Process] Taking the 500 book reviews of the top 100 books co-read by the Douban Group as the research object, the paper summarized the dimensions of the reading appeal elements through the coding method, and analyzed the changes, the characteristics and the mechanism of that in different reading phases. [Result/Conclusion] The reading appeal elements are summarized into 31 specific elements from 7 dimensions in reading materials-related and reader-related aspects. The action mechanism refers to expectation-confirmation, situated cognition, social identity, and quality-value-satisfaction. Based on the concept of reading appeal, it proposes that reading appeal elements can be used to optimize the description of bibliographic information, quickly understand readers’ reading needs, provide reading recommendations, carry out evidence-based reading activities, and ensure the effectiveness of reading services.
