[Purpose/Significance] In the era of artificial intelligence, the use of AI like ChatGPT generates immense productivity and value, but it also brings risks such as academic misconduct, privacy security, and intellectual property rights. Exploring and analyzing the ChatGPT guidance in British and American universities can provide some valuable references for its formulation in Chinese universities. [Methods/Process] Based on the grounded theory and NVivo 12.0, this paper analyzed and coded the texts of ChatGPT guidance from 15 British and American universities, and then constructed a theoretical model on the ChatGPT guidance. [Result/Conclusion] The research indicates that the guidance on ChatGPT use in universities includes general rules and scope definition, academic usage norms, and teaching usage norms. Among them, the general rules and scope definition are the foundation, academic usage norm is the safeguard, and teaching usage norm is the fundamental. Considering the practical experiences of using ChatGPT in British and American universities and the current situation of ChatGPT services in Chinese university libraries, this research proposes its enlightenment on the further development of ChatGPT services in Chinese university libraries.
