Librarians in the Context of Generative AI: Roles, Skills, and Approaches

Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] To explore the role of librarians in the context of generative AI, this article proposes a professional skills system for librarians, and promotes the intelligent development of libraries. [Method/Process] Based on relevant research literature, a keyword co-occurrence network graph was constructed using the visualization tool VOSviewer. The evolution of librarians under the changes of professional generated content (PGC), user generated content (UGC), and artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) were sorted out, and their future role, professional skills, and development were explored. [Result/Conclusion] In the context of generative AI, the future role of librarians is positioned as quality inspectors of data and information, navigators of knowledge, and disseminators of wisdom. They should build cognitive skills based on critical thinking, co-creation skills based on actor network theory, and professional skills based on information lifecycle management.
