Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] Exploring the opportunities, challenges, and participation mechanisms of academic libraries in the context of the current trend of preprint scholarly communication, this study aims to provide insights for academia and library practice. [Methods/Significance] The study adopted literature review, case study, and comparative analysis to investigate the current practices of academic libraries participating in preprint scholarly communication systems domestically and internationally. It systematically deconstructed the existing academic library system framework based on the “motivation-opportunity-ability” model. [Result/Conclusion] The academic library faces opportunities and challenges within the preprint scholarly communication system. It can expand its functions in terms of infrastructure, business processes, resource development, and service application outcomes on the basis of the existing academic library system structure. By actively integrating into the process of scientific research and academic exchange, the academic library can play a driving and leading role in the dissemination of information and knowledge.
