Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] Based on the perspective of individual scientists’ microdata and behavioral analysis, this study explores the driving effects and influencing factors of open access on scientific research performance, and provides new perspectives for advancing the paradigm change of scholarly communication. [Methods/Process] Based on the papers and collaborative network data of 9757 authors in Nature journals from 2012-2022, this study constructed multiple regression and mediating effect models to examine the impact of open access on research performance and the mediating role of authors’ collaborative network, and tested the heterogeneous effects of country, discipline, and academic age through group regression. [Result/Conclusion] The study draws the following conclusions: ①Open access can enhance scientists’ research performance. The enhancement is universal for scientists with different disciplinary backgrounds and career stages. ②Scientists’ research collaboration networks play a key mediating role between open access and research performance. ③ The driving effect of open access on scientists’ research performance is subject to the level of regional development, and decreases sequentially across China, the US, and the EU. These results can help guide scientists’ open access behavior and career development, and provide a theoretical basis for the formulation and implementation of open access policies in China.
