Empirical Analysis of Public Library User Book Borrowing Needs and Preferences Under the Online Book Borrowing Service Model

Abstract

[Purpose/Significance] Analyzing the needs and preferences of public library online book borrowing service users can enrich the public library user theory and provide guidance for optimizing the online book borrowing service and implementing personalized services. [Method/Process] Based on the over 100,000 borrowing records from the Foshan Library’s online book borrowing platform, this paper employed statistical analysis to summarize the characteristics of online book borrowing service users. Word cloud, variance analysis, and LSD post-hoc comparisons were employed to investigate the users’ online borrowing needs for different themed books. The K-means clustering was adopted to identify user group segmentation and preference patterns. [Result/Conclusion] Users’ book borrowing needs can be adjusted by the book borrowing service model. The online book borrowing service, based on the Internet and logistics, can impact the needs and preferences of public library users. Moreover, users of the online book borrowing service are divided into three categories: single enthusiasts for literary books (male/female), balanced enthusiasts for art, history, and geography books (male/female), and single enthusiasts for medical and health books (female). This study has developed a differentiated needs theory of online book borrowing service users in public libraries and demonstrates the ability of public libraries to adjust user needs and cultivate new user groups through the new service model. Based on these findings, the optimization suggestions were proposed for the online book borrowing service regarding platform design, collection layout, and user services.
